  • Sheaths or arms that at the bottom join the fork with the hub of the wheel, usually through a quick release

Road, track, hybrid or cyclocross bikes use hardtail forks that are made of lightweight materials such as Aluminum, Carbon, Titanium to reduce the weight of the bike set and are not ready to receive punches. Its size ranges from 25 to "to fit the most common wheels.

The BMX modes also use hardtail forks but are generally made with stronger materials to withstand jumps and stunts. The size of these forks is much lower since wheels of between 20 and 24 "are used.

Urban bikes such as cruiser, fixie, hybrid, touring, ... use hardtail or suspension forks depending on the model, and the characteristics for which the bicycle is used, but accept the two forks equally.

Chapter apart deserve the suspension forks that are used in the different modalities of Mountain Biking. The main parts that make up a suspension fork are:

  • Steered tube: It is the top of the fork and is used to attach it to the steering shaft. Their size ranges from 1 1/8 "to 1 1/5" and are made of lightweight materials such as Aluminum and Carbon Fiber
  • Crowns: This is the part where the steering tube and bars are attached. Two heads can be used on Tyres and Enduro forks. They are made of Aluminum or Carbon and some are forged
  • Bars / Stanchion: These are the side pipes that go up and down each time the fork dampens an impact. They are made of Steel or Aluminum and are manufactured in different thicknesses. The bars are provided with anodized treatments to eliminate possible frictions with the seals and seals.
  • Arch / Bridge: It is the piece that joins the two bars of the fork by the front. It serves to give greater rigidity to the fork assembly. In some cases the bridge is placed in the back
  • Lower leg / Bottles: The suspension system is housed inside and the outside stands are incorporated to support the disc brakes. They are generally made with Magnesium and Aluminum and have a diameter between and 32 mm

Over the years Mountain Bikes are undergoing a constant evolution and for each discipline of MTB such as Cross Country, All Mountain, Enduro, FreeRide or downhill you can configure forks with different characteristics that adapt to the needs of each one of them.

These characteristics that differentiate them are:

  • The distance: The distance that the shock absorber can carry out. The routes used are:
    • Cross Country, Rally, Marathon: 80-100mm
    • Trail: 110-120 mm
    • All Mountain: 140 mm
    • Enduro: 160 mm
    • Freeride: 180 mm
    • Downhill: 200 mm
  • The Rebound: It is the speed with which the suspension recovers its initial position. You can usually adjust the rebound level
  • The Lock: Used to leave the fork in a hardtail position. Some use a command located on the handlebar and is very useful for driving on asphalt or runways without bumps
  • BOB: It refers to the movement that produces the pedaling in the fork. Looking for a way to eliminate it at 100%
  • Air Suspension or Spring: spring parts are heavier and difficult to regulate. The air ones are lighter and technologically advanced
  • Cross Country, Rally, Marathon: 80-100mm
  • Trail: 110-120 mm
  • All Mountain: 140 mm
  • Enduro: 160 mm
  • Freeride: 180 mm
  • Downhill: 200 mm
