Rear Derailleur

The rear derailleur of the bicycle is the necessary part for the correct gearing of the sprockets during gear changes. The main function is to move the chain to the sprockets when the change lever is pressed.

The rear derailleur consists mainly of 3 parts:

  • Clamping piece: Is the part that connects the diverter to the frame
  • Body: This is the moving part of the diverter. It is attached to the change cable that comes from the handlebar. It incorporates a spring that performs the function of moving the chain by the different sprockets. Also found in this piece are the adjustment screws that are usually or 3 and are used to adjust the position of the chain.
  • Paw: Is the bottom of the rear derailleur. It is articulated and attached to the body by a rocker. It consists of two sheave s and its main function is to keep the chain aligned between the pinion and the derailleur.

The correct use of the sprockets is very important when riding a bicycle because improper use causes that the force is not transmitted in the best way and the effort made does not become the result. Generally, the smaller sprocket s located in the lower part of the cassette are used for downhill zones, those of the middle part for plain sections and the largest sprocket s located in the upper part of the cassette for climbs. also you have to take into account the use of the chainrings that combined with the sprockets make you can choose between a variety of gears to choose.

The rear derailleur is located on the rear wheel and is exposed to shock, either by falls or by blows of stones or branches. For this reason it is very important that the rear derailleur work properly and is always perfectly aligned. Otherwise the sprocket change will be done incorrectly and the chain will not seat in the correct place, causing problems of traction and possible falls.
